Learn About NIMS – The National Incident Management System

In February of 2003 the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5- Management of Domestic Incidents was released, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS) was established.
According to FEMA, “NIMS provides the template for the management of incidents,” and this type of system is applicable for emergency management at all levels of government, as well as for non-governmental public agencies and related organizations in the private sector.

NIMS provides a system for collaboration in order to properly handle emergency situations requiring multi-agency or jurisdictional incidents. Preparation is key in helping to ensure the most productive reaction to an emergency. Anyone who may be involved in emergency response should understand the components of NIMS and have the knowledge to work within various sections of the system.
