Stress in a work environment can come from any direction. Deadlines, performance pressure, personal issues, reactions to outside events, the list goes on. The unifying factor is that employees have to find a way to move past these stressors in order to excel in their roles.
Leaders who fail to control the stress levels within their teams may find their organization suffering from high turnover, reduced production or both. This is why personnel issues such as stress management deserve such a high-priority status on corporate agendas: Workers dealing with intense pressure can’t carry their companies to positive results.
Many workers feel restricted
It’s very possible that many leaders are dealing with stressed workers without even realizing it. The Guardian recently noted that workers tend to not only feel so worn out that they need to take time off, they may not even talk to their supervisors about what they’re going through. The news provider pointed to a recent BHSF survey which indicated 25 percent of workers took stress-related time off over the course of a year, but more than half of respondents don’t think they’re able to speak to their leaders about workplace pressure.

What does it take to fight back against such an overwhelming feeling? The Guardian noted  employers and team members should work together to resolve the issue because they both have a stake in getting workers back to a point of equilibrium. With this double motivation becoming evident, it’s time for organizations to invest in programs to relieve the burdens their teams are feeling.
Millennials especially affected
Young employees are rising through the ranks at companies around the world – but they may be feeling uncomfortable on their way to the top. Personnel Today explained millennial workers felt the most stress in a recently completed LifeWorks survey. This is counter to the prevailing image of Generation Y as laid-back or complacent. The disconnect could come from the new expectations cropping up in corporate environments – time demands that go beyond traditional working hours are common and can be hard to deal with.
Personnel Today offered a reminder that while young people are feeling the greatest levels of stress today, no single demographic group has sole rights to anxiety or pressure. These factors exert influence on employees at all levels, male and female, young and old. Organizations should take a serious stance on reducing their levels of stress and commit to strategies that apply to any worker who feels the need, and can break through reticence to seek help.
