The Do’s and Don’ts of Dealing with Hazardous Spills

While walking through your workplace you come across a spill of a hazardous material. From the smallest of spills to those on a large-scale, there are serious considerations for the safety of you, your co-workers and the environment.
Based on OSHA’s HAZMAT cleanup worker classification system, employees designated to handle hazardous material incidents need to be trained according which out of five categories they fall into. The categories of training levels are: first responder awareness, first responder operations, hazardous materials technician, hazardous materials specialist, and incident commander.

The Video On Demand training “Dealing With Hazardous Spills” explores the training requirements and responsibilities of cleanup workers under the different OSHA levels. The video demonstrates some of the basics on hazardous material spills and what happens when a typical small spill occurs. There are many tasks to be managed in spill response from selecting the correct sorbents, wearing appropriate PPE, to the disposal of hazardous waste.

This type of training is critical for everyone, as any employee, at any level within an organization, can discover a hazardous materials spill. When a HAZMAT  is involved cleanup procedures require the expertise of those properly trained to handle such scenarios.
