The importance of moving during the workday

A walking meeting can boost productivity and improve your health.

A walking meeting can boost productivity and improve your health.

According to a recent study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, sedentary behavior increases the chance of getting a disease or condition that will lead to premature death.
This behavior, such as watching Netflix for hours without moving, sitting at your desk all day, or driving to and from work, is literally killing you.
Data was adjusted to include the amount of exercise a person may accomplish. The study revealed that the amount of sitting done in a day outweighs the benefit of exercise at all. Obviously the amount of exercise you do does impact your health, but not in the way most are led to think.
Long periods of sitting can lead to death caused by:

  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Cancer
  • Chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.

The World Health Organization has identified physical inactivity as the fourth-leading cause of death around the world.
Prolonged sitting for eight to 12 hours a day increases your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 90 percent.
How can you get more active? For starters, get out of your chair. Now. Other life changes include:

  • Dress to move: Don’t wear uncomfortable clothes and shoes. If you’re uncomfortable, you’re more likely to feel better sitting and not moving around. Wear something more comfortable for more movement and a happier day.
  • Using the standing desk at work: Sitting as your desk all day can be bad for your posture, legs and overall health. Try using a standing desk for a set amount of time to keep the blood flowing and your body engaged.
  • Take a break: Get away from your desk. Take a quick walk, try the stairs instead or grab a coffee down the block. A few minutes away can boost productivity when you return.
  • Try a walking meeting: Instead of sitting in a room together, try a walking meeting instead. Movement will get both your legs and your brain in motion.
