Are You Ready for Cold Weather?
Even though we are just enjoying the first few weeks of Autumn, it is difficult to ignore the fact that winter is not too far off. Soon we will all have snow and ice to contend with, not to mention sub-zero temperatures. It is important to prepare workers with winter safety training as we head into these winter months.
Working outdoors, even in seemingly mild temperatures (30-50 degree weather), puts you at risk for developing hypothermia. According to the Mayo Clinic, your body loses heat from radiated heat (or heat loss from your body being unprotected – not wearing a hat for example), direct contact with the cold (like being in cold water, or wearing cold, wet clothes) and wind (which removes the natural layer of warm air from protecting your skin). The ways your body loses heat could easily occur when your job forces you to work outside in winter weather.
“Hypothermia and Frostbite” provides workers with an understanding of both medical emergencies and how they occur. The video training demonstrates how to prevent and treat hypothermia, as well as how to recognize and treat frostbite.
Winter weather not only poses risks to our health as we are exposed to cold temperatures, it also creates risky driving situations which require knowledge of winter weather driving techniques. Ice and snow compromise road conditions and cause poor visibility for drivers.
It is important to prepare before you hit the roads during winter by keeping certain supplies in your car (such as a warm blanket, high-protein snacks, water, etc.) in case your car breaks down and you need to wait in the cold for assistance.
